Report for Portmore
Golf Club – Devon League Organisers 2008
Welcome to the Ladies Devon League 2008 AGM and thanks, once again
to Fingle Glen for providing us with the venue.
208 has been a challenging year for the Ladies Devon League. Once
again the weather has played a major part with the fixtures and well
done to Dartmouth who played at least four of their games before the
end of April!
As host club I hope that you found the information on the website
easy to follow and was kept up to date as much as possible.
For me it was not a straightforward year (although I was informed
by Ilfracombe last year that it was easy). We had a couple of walkovers,
mainly due to the weather, a tie in one division, both on points and
reserve points and a change of venue for the Finals. The play off was
between Dartmouth and Ilfracombe and was played at Portmore, with Dartmouth
being the eventual winners.
When I realised that Portmore, as host club, were going to qualify
for the Finals I made provisional plans for it to be held at either
Fingle Glen or Teign Valley. This was after asking Downes Crediton
and Tiverton. However Fingle Glen also qualified and unfortunately
Teign Valley had to let this booking go. So the fifth club I approached
was Torrington, who, at very short notice, agreed to provide the venue
for the day. It should be remembered that the Devon League does not
hold enough money to pay for these venues and we depend upon the goodwill
of golf clubs to book out a whole day for us.
Luckily the Finals Day had glorious weather with the Semi finals being
between Fingle Glen and Saunton, and Portmore against Dartmouth.
Torrington golf
course was playing well with a good standard of golf from all teams.
The match referee noticed “the Ladies don’t
give many gimmies”. The final in the afternoon was between Fingle
Glen and Portmore and you couldn’t have asked for a closer match.
Talk about tension and drama. It came down to the last match of the
last hold with the last putt!! Fingle Glen just clinched it so many
congratulations to Sandra and her team and commiserations to Portmore.
It was a superb day.
Finally I would
like to thank everyone who supported me and gave me advice over the
year and I would like to wish all the best to Okehampton
for hosting next year’s Ladies Devon League.
There is a financial statement in the packs given out. As you can
see there was very little money for this year but with the fees going
up for next year it should be easier for Okehampton
Proposals – none
Draw for 2009
Three teams have now withdrawn, Dartmouth, Teign Valley and Crediton.
They have explained that they would like to go for the Sheila Creasey
or the Presidents cup and each club did not have enough to play all
competitions. It may be that for the future we could encourage other
Devon teams to play in the league for the future.

discussion on Zoning – Karen suggested that
this be brought as a proposal for 2009.
Questions: How
does the scoring affect the group with only three in – Karen
advised that it would still be the winner of that division that went
through.
Introduction of the 2009 Host club - Okehampton Golf Glub – contacts
are K King and J Warren.
Thanks from Jane to Karen and all her team at Portmore for running
the league for this year. And Okehampton will try and do as well for
2009. Jane did note that it was Okehampton who started the Devon League
21 years ago and Kay was part of that group. Good luck to everyone
for the coming year.
