In 1913 a 9 hole golf course was laid out by J.H.Taylor,
the celebrated Golf Professional and winner of the Open Championship
and opened in July of the same year. One man only was employed on it
during
the
war.
In 1921 it was decided to extend the course to 18 holes. This work was
supervised by Mr E. P Burd, the then Hon. Secretary, the benefit of whose
long experience of golf and golf courses the Club was extremely fortunate
in obtaining.
The full course was formally opened by ex-open-champions, J. H. Taylor
and Alex Herd on the 9th May 1923. They were delighted with the course,
saying the site was one of the most beautiful they had ever seen, that
it afforded a most thorough test of golf, the soil and turf were excellent,
and there were no two holes alike. The course has been improved and extended
since this time and is kept in pristine condition with greens second
to none in the County.
